I just read part of your articke, specially about the 5 questions. I have a grandson who will be four on July 9th, 2007. He has had very delayed speeach, took a long time to learn to walk, he was about 18 months before he walked. Does not make eye contact when talking with him, he has terrible anger spells, he constantly repeats a statement until he gets what he wants, will not take no for an answer without a temper tantrum. Very short attention expand. Still walks on tipy toes. His small and large motor skills are of a two year old. His speech still very undeveloped and often difficult to understand him. Even his smile and laughter are not of a normal almost 4 year old. I have 12 grandchildren and he does have a causing who is only 6 weeks older, and totally very independent. Until two months ago, Jeremy was still having to wear diapers, finally he has decided to go into the toilet and does a great job.
Having worked with Autism children many years ago, I am very concerned, I have asked his parents to please ask for testing, but they are not willing to look into. May be fear of finding out what they may think it may be wrong.
Jeremy was born deprived of oxygen and had to be rushed to ICU after his birth. He suffers from Asthma and constantly sick.
Am I worried for nothing? How can I help his folks look into some testing? They live in Petaluma, CA, I live in Santa Rosa, CA.
Can you give me any suggestions, please?
Nora, I live in Rohnert Park. Dr. Catherine Ross on Sonoma Ave., in Santa Rosa is a good place to start. You will need a referral from your grandchild’s pediatrician though. Good luck.
The school district can test him also! They will have to offer speech therapy and whatever else he needs! Even if it is some other developmental disorder, he needs an IEP so he can get early intervention.
